Lisa Faturos awarded Nora McGuire Award at WNY Race for the Cure
In 2015, Komen WNY announced the creation of the Nora McGuire Volunteer Award, named for founder and longtime volunteer leader of the Komen Western New York Race for the Cure®. Nora was honored in 2015 as the first recipient of the honor, which will be awarded every year for “extraordinary effort, outstanding leadership and dedicated commitment to the breast cancer cause.”
Faturos, of Amherst, has been volunteering for Komen for 10 years, working as the chair of the Finance Committee and as lead for finance and accounting for the entire Western New York Affiliate. This role included countless volunteer hours handling financial work for the affiliate, including daily accounting, budgeting, helping with year-end auditing, as well as overseeing the financial duties for all Komen events over the years, and much more.
Faturos selflessly devoted several hours a week to Komen – even more in some months — for over 10 years.
“I was asked by my best friend Angel Beiter to help out registering people at the Race in 2007,” she said. “I was SO inspired by the courage of the survivors and the dedication of the volunteers that I knew I had to become more involved in the organization. I, like so many, have had friends and family members get diagnosed with breast cancer and while I am volunteering, I feel like I am fighting for them and all of the other survivors.”
Faturos, who has been controller at McGard LLC for 25 years, will accept the award at the 2016 Komen Race for the Cure, to be held on June 11 at Buffalo RiverWorks, 359 Ganson St. Information and Registration is available at www.KomenWNY.org
“Lisa has been an incredibly devoted and valuable volunteer for the Komen organization,” said Executive Director Liz Kahn. “The amount of work she has done for the cause could probably add up to a second full-time job. Komen can’t thank her enough and we’re thrilled to give her this honor.”
McGuire, who continues as a volunteer leader of operations of the WNY Race for the Cure, said Faturos has been integral to the success of the event.
“We are so lucky to have Lisa on our team and I am honored to have her name added to this award,” said McGuire. “She has given so much of herself – not just as an accountant, but as a leader, an organizer, a teacher, and a generous and devoted volunteer.”
Since 2001, Susan G. Komen Western New York® has donated more than $4.6 million to local breast health and breast cancer programs, with the majority of those dollars coming through the Race for the Cure. This will be the 16th Anniversary of the Race in Buffalo and the first time at Buffalo RiverWorks.
Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds goes toward funding grants to local life-saving programs that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening, treatment and support programs- all aimed at under-served individuals in the eight counties of Western New York. The remaining 25 percent of money raised supports the Komen National Research Grants Program.
In March of this year, Komen WNY awarded over $267,000 in grants to five local organizations.
