Treatment Assistance Program provides direct financial support for
breast cancer patients in active treatment

BUFFALO, NY – APRIL 9, 2020 – Susan G. Komen® Upstate New York today announced a new investment in its commitment to support local women and men battling a breast cancer diagnosis. The Komen Upstate New York Treatment Assistance Program will provide direct financial assistance for local patients managing the crippling costs associated with treatment.

“No one should have to choose between putting food on the table and getting the treatment they need to save their life,” said Scott Philbin, Board President of Komen Upstate New York. “Thanks to the continued and unwavering support of our donors, we are able to offer this program to our community at a time when it is most needed.”

To be eligible, patients must have incomes at or below 250% of the federal poverty line, have an active breast cancer diagnosis, and be compliant with treatment. The program covers limited costs associated with breast cancer treatment such as oral pain medication, anti-nausea medication, oral chemotherapy/hormone therapy, child care/elder care, home care, transportation, lymphedema care and supplies, and durable medical equipment. Patients are eligible to receive funding every twelve months.

“One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime,” said Andrea Moran, Executive Director for Komen Upstate New York. “Nationwide, nearly 40% of breast cancer patients have said they have postponed or did not fill drug prescriptions based on cost. We know another 29% of breast cancer patients have missed doctor’s appointments to save on medical expenses. This is unacceptable, and we must do something to help.”

It is estimated that nearly 16,000 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in New York State in 2020. Komen’s Treatment Assistance Program aims to advance Komen’s Bold Goal of reducing breast cancer deaths by 50% in the U.S. by 2026 by supporting access to care as patients fight breast cancer.
